When to Visit Tauranga

  • Summer (December – February)

Summer in Tauranga is warm, sunny, and bustling, with temperatures ranging from 68°F to 80°F (20°C to 27°C). This is peak season, when locals and tourists flock to the area’s white-sand beaches like Mount Maunganui and Papamoa Beach for swimming, surfing, paddleboarding, and sunbathing. Hiking up or around Mauao (Mount Maunganui) rewards you with panoramic coastal views. Waterfront cafes and markets are lively, and the harbor buzzes with boat tours, dolphin watching, and fishing trips.
  • Autumn (March – May)

Autumn brings slightly cooler weather, with temperatures between 55°F and 72°F (13°C to 22°C), but the sea remains warm enough for swimming well into the season. The crowds begin to thin, making it a perfect time to enjoy the beaches, hot saltwater pools at the base of the Mount, or take peaceful hikes through nearby parks and reserves. Local vineyards and produce markets showcase the season’s harvest, and the region’s stunning golden light makes this a favorite time for photography and scenic drives.
  • Winter (June – August)

Winter in Tauranga is mild by New Zealand standards, with temperatures ranging from 46°F to 59°F (8°C to 15°C). While it’s not beach weather, the climate is still pleasant for outdoor activities like walking along the harbor, mountain biking, or exploring nearby waterfalls and bush trails. The geothermal pools in and around Tauranga become particularly inviting during the cooler months. It’s also a great time to visit art galleries, museums, and cozy local eateries
  • Spring (September – November)

Spring is a time of renewal in Tauranga, with temperatures gradually rising to 60°F–70°F (15°C to 21°C). Flowers bloom across the region, and outdoor activities become more popular again as the weather warms. This is a great time to explore McLaren Falls Park, the Katikati murals, or take early-season boat tours to spot marine wildlife. With fewer visitors than in summer, spring offers a great balance of nice weather and tranquility.

What an amazing tour. We saw whales, dolphins and porpoises. The crew was very friendly and enthusiastic. We could really tell they are very respectful towards the animals, we were able to see two humpbacks for nearly half an hour, everybody was silent, the engine was off and the crew was also in awe. Only when the whales left, the engine was back on and we also started moving again. We really felt like we had all the time in the world and we didn't disturb the animals.
