Cañon City sits just south of the center of the state of Colorado. The city is located on the Arkansas River where it exits the Royal Gorge. Cañon City’s economy is largely built around tourism, most notably for the Royal Gorge Bridge and the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Cañon City prides itself on having great experiences, but far less crowds than other Colorado mountain towns. Visitors enjoy outdoors activity, including rafting, hiking, biking, rock climbing, zip lining, and skydiving. Fun fact – Cañon City is one of only five US cities to have an “ñ” in its name.
The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is the biggest tourist attraction in the area. Visitors ride this historic train through the gorge. This trip has received recognition as one of the best train rides in the country. Consider upgrading to a first-class dinner service on the train.
The highest suspension bridge in North America offers once-in-a-lifetime views. The bridge is 955 feet high and visitors can walk across it. Other options to cross the gorge include a sky gondola and zip lining.
The Arkansas River is the most rafted river in the country. Fair warning, the Royal Gorge section of the river is much more technical (advanced, with rough rapids) than other parts of the river. Make sure that you book an appropriate trip.
Downtown Cañon City is charming, with plenty of shops and restaurants inside historical buildings. The city’s motto is “Gateway to the Authentic West” and the area is abundant with its historic western roots.
Winters are much milder than other parts of Colorado. This is due to the unique geography that protects the city from severe weather. Daily high temps are in the low 50s.
Late spring is a popular time for rafters and kayakers as the water runoff is high. May is ideal as daily high temps are in the 70s and it is less crowded due to school not being out for summer yet.
Summer is peak tourism season. Camping is very popular as there aren't a ton of great lodging options (and the camping is pretty stellar). Daily highs get into the upper 80s.
Falls are also a good time to visit with less crowds and mild weather. October highs are in the upper 60s.
