ATM Cave and Xunantunich Temple Combo Tour
An early departure is necessary to make this tour possible. An hour drive from San Ignacio will take you to the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, where the ATM Cave is located. A thirty minute hike through jungle trails and river crossings will bring you to the entrance of the cave. A short swim (approximately 15 feet) allows access to "Xibalba" the Maya underworld. From here you will be guided by your headlamp, navigating your way through the cave to the main plaza, where burial chambers are found while your guide explains the sacrificial ceremonies that took place here thousands of years ago.
After changing into dry clothes, and having lunch, you will ride to Xunantunich Maya Temple. To get to the site one must cross the Mopan River by a hand cranked ferry. You will learn about the history of this site and the Maya civilization that once inhabited it.
