Learn authentic Japanese home cooking, table manners, and seasonal dishes in a Washoku class in Tokyo.
Immerse yourself in Japanese culinary traditions on the Washoku Cooking Class in Tokyo, a hands-on experience that teaches authentic home cooking, culture, and table manners in a traditional setting. Participants prepare an Ichiju Sansai meal—a classic structure of soup, rice, one main dish, and two side dishes—using fresh, seasonal ingredients that reflect Japan’s four distinct seasons. Beyond cooking, the class explores Japanese culture, culinary customs, etiquette, and the spirit of hospitality known as omotenashi.
Guests begin with a welcome and Japanese tea, followed by lessons on katsuobushi shaving, dashi preparation, and essential seasonings like soy sauce, mirin, sake, and miso. After observing demonstrations, participants cook seasonal dishes such as bamboo shoot rice in spring, bitter melon stir-fry in summer, chestnut rice in autumn, and hearty miso soup in winter. The experience concludes with tasting the prepared meal together, offering a delicious and culturally enriching insight into traditional Japanese cuisine.
