Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just an hour's drive from Reykjavík and sits where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet. It's also home to Iceland's ancient parliament, Althing. Visitors can hike, fish, or dive in the Silfra fissure, and explore volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and a lake.
A 45-minute drive brings you to the Geysir Geothermal Area, where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, surrounded by bubbling springs and steam vents. Just 10 minutes further is Gullfoss, a powerful two-tiered waterfall with turquoise water plunging into a canyon. Lastly, Kerid Crater, 50 minutes from Gullfoss, features a striking blue-green lake in a red volcanic caldera formed 3,000 years ago.
