Rock Climb Guides Ridge on Mt. Crested Butte
Though intimidating to look at, this climb is a great introduction to technical alpine climbing or rock climbing depending on how the route is approached. Due to the varying levels of difficulty, the Guides Ridge is perfect as a family outing or can be equally challenging for the seasoned alpine climber or rock jock. You'll begin the day with a quick and beautiful ride on the Crested Butte Mountain Resort's Silver Queen lift to 11,500 feet. Riding the lift up helps to minimize the amount of hiking needed to get to the base of the route. A short traverse from the lift across the alpine boulder fields will take you to the base of the long and jagged 800 foot arete known as the Guides Ridge. After a roped ascent of a few hours you will arrive on the 12,162 foot summit of Mt Crested Butte. From the summit you can enjoy a 60m rappel directly off the top, or a leisurely stroll down the standard hiking route. Then board the chairlift back to the base area.
