Japanese Sword Appreciation and Laido Demo
Explore samurai sword culture at Shijumanya Honpo: handle blades, learn craftsmanship, and see Iaido in action.
Experience the soul of the samurai through authentic Japanese sword appreciation at Shijumanya Honpo, a historic establishment founded in 1875. Participants can handle carefully preserved swords spanning centuries, including pieces up to 500 years old, feeling their weight, balance, and craftsmanship firsthand. The artistry of the sword fittings, featuring exquisite lacquer work and Kaga inlay, highlights the fusion of weaponry and art that defines Japanese sword culture.
After exploring the historic blades, watch a powerful Iaido demonstration, the traditional martial art of sword drawing developed in the 16th century. Participants can wear authentic Iaido uniforms for photos, creating lasting memories of this rare cultural experience guided by Masahisa Shijima, a 2nd dan practitioner and descendant of samurai. This hands-on program offers a unique connection to living history, combining artistry, martial skill, and centuries of tradition.
