Kanazawa Art: Hand-Painting Kutani Porcelain Workshop
Create custom Kutani porcelain in Kanazawa: draw designs, choose colors, and artisans complete your piece.
Experience hands-on Kutani porcelain art at Kanazawa’s only remaining Kutani ceramic kiln, established in 1870 during the Meiji era. Participants begin by drawing their own design outlines on white ceramic vessels and selecting colors from traditional Kutani pigments. The historic workshop creates ceramics entirely by hand, from clay blending and shaping to final glazing and coloring, allowing a direct connection to centuries-old Japanese craftsmanship.
Skilled master artisans then apply the chosen colors using authentic Kutani techniques, and each piece is carefully fired in the kiln to preserve its vibrant beauty. Finished works are shipped approximately two months later, giving participants a professionally completed, genuine Kutani ceramic piece that reflects their personal creativity. This experience combines artistic expression, traditional expertise, and the enduring elegance of Japanese porcelain.
