Kuelap Archaeological Site: A Journey to the Past
A full-day guided exploration of the Kuelap fortress, featuring a scenic cable car ride over the Peruvian Andes.
Discover the enigmatic Fortaleza de Kuelap, a majestic pre-Inca archaeological site nestled high in the mountains. Often referred to as the “Machu Picchu of the North,” this mountaintop fortress was once the heart of the ancient Chachapoya civilization. The journey begins with a drive through the breathtaking Utcubamba Valley to the village of Nuevo Tingo.
From there, board the Kuelap Cable Car for a 20-minute ride offering stunning panoramic views of the rugged Andean landscape. After arriving at La Malca, a 25-minute walk leads to the entrance of the citadel. A professional guide will lead a three-hour exploration of the site, sharing the history of the towering stone walls, circular houses, and the culture of the Chachapoyas people.
The experience concludes with a return cable car ride and a local lunch in Tingo. Before arriving back in Chachapoyas, a brief stop is made at a scenic viewpoint to observe the Archaeological Site of Macro from across the valley.
