The Las Pailas sector shows the extraordinary power of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, the most extensive and active in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Steam and sulfur arise from natural fumaers of the yellowish and reddish soil. Admire the mud pailas with their different brown hues of boiling volcanic water, the grayish color of mud bubbles, and explosions in the big pailas. This volcano is unique in Costa Rica.

With a naturalist guide, walk the 2.5-mile Las Pailas circular trail through the dry tropical forest to see the volcano’s best views, incredible nature, volcanic activity, and wildlife sightings. The national park is home to more than 300 species of birds and many other animals such as armadillos, iguanas, pizotes, cariblanco monkeys, howler monkeys, and spider monkeys.
