Whale and Dolphin Watching in Lajes do Pico
In the Azores, meet the giants of Pico on this great 3-hour zodiac adventure starting from Lajes do Pico harbor.
Just some miles off the Pico Island coast in the Azores, there are big slopes reaching 3,000m deep in the Atlantic Ocean. This is very favourable for cetaceans, who sometimes appear very close to the island. Other characteristics such as hydrothermal vents and submarines mounts create the perfect environment for whales and dolphins. Basically, Pico Island is a great whale-watching spot in the Azores.
This half-day adventure to see whales and dolphins begins at the port of Lajes do Pico, on the south coast of the island. It is from there that marine biologists will shortly brief you about the experience (such as some whale watching guidelines to respect the animals in their natural habitat), and about the species that you will be able to observe. This boat trip on the semi-rigid "Alfredo Baleeiro" lasts about 3 hours. In the Azorean waters, 28 species of cetaceans can be observed, and spring is considered the best time to see large whales in the Azores, such as blue whales, fin whales and sei whales.
Please note: During the trip, each passenger must wear a life jacket for safety reasons. For your comfort, Futurismo provides waterproof jackets.
