Know Before You Go
  • Whale sightings are never guaranteed, as these are wild animals in their natural habitat, which makes each encounter truly special. However, San Francisco Bay and the area just outside the Golden Gate are among the richest whale-watching regions in the world. The crew and naturalist guides have extensive knowledge of these waters, and sighting rates are consistently high during the season. Rain or shine, fog or sun, the Bay always has something extraordinary to offer. If whales are not spotted, guests are welcome to return for another ride on any regularly scheduled cruise.
  • Just outside the Golden Gate, conditions can be choppier than inside the Bay, which is part of the authentic experience. Guests who are sensitive to motion are advised to take over-the-counter seasickness medication (such as Dramamine or Bonine) before boarding, eat a light meal, and choose a seat on the main deck or at the stern of the vessel. The crew is always available to assist. Many guests who have never taken seasickness medication have a perfectly comfortable voyage, but it is best to be prepared.
  • The San Francisco marine layer means conditions can be cooler on the water than on shore, even on sunny days. Guests are strongly encouraged to dress in layers, including a base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a windproof outer jacket. The vessels offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Sunscreen is recommended even on cloudy days, as UV rays can reflect off the water. Binoculars can greatly enhance the whale-watching experience, and bringing a camera is recommended to capture memorable moments.
  • Parking validation is not offered. Guests are encouraged to use an app such as SpotHero to find parking nearby, as there are many lots within easy walking distance. Public transportation is also available, with the Muni F-Line streetcar stopping directly at Fisherman's Wharf and two Cable Car lines providing convenient access to the Wharf.
  • Wheelchair accessible
