Experience the iconic English Harbour with its colonial architecture, tasty restaurants, enticing boutiques, and picturesque beaches. English Harbour is best known for Nelson’s Dockyard, the headquarters of the British Navy for the Leeward Islands in the late 18th century. The dockyard has been fully restored and is steeped in the history of the British and Antigua. Only a short drive from the city is the popular and stunning Shirley Heights, the highest point in Antigua. Don’t miss Pigeon Point and Galleon Beach just outside the city to see spectacular white sand beaches and crystal clear waters.
Nelson’s Dockyard is one of the most historic ports in the Caribbean and was used for the protection of British assets (namely sugar) during the American War of Independence. Nelson’s Dockyard became essential to the running of the British fleet. The dockyard was named after Horatio Nelson, a British captain who was sent to Antigua in 1784 to ensure the island was complying with British law. When the sugar industry waned, the dockyard sat empty for sixty years until restoration began in the 1950s to make it what it is today. In 2016, Nelson’s Dockyard was name a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is now the best-known and most visited site in Antigua.
Guarding the entrance to English Harbour are the towering and magnificent Pillars of Hercules. Often referred to as “rock soldiers”, these natural geological formations were carved over time by the sea. The Pillars are best viewed by the ocean, but can also be appreciated from a hike out of Galleon Beach. In addition to acting as protection to English Harbour, there are those who believe the Pillars of Hercules act as a gateway to other worlds.
Known as the most iconic point in Antigua, Shirley Heights, a historic military lookout and gun battery, is just a short hike or taxi ride from Nelson’s Dockyard. With an elevation of 490 feet showcasing a panoramic view of Antigua, there is no guessing why this was a perfect spot for a military lookout. Now it’s been restored for visitors, and they can enjoy a tasty meal at Shirley Heights Lookout Bar & Restaurant. The view cannot be missed! Due to the heat of the day, it is recommended to hike in the morning or in the evening. Evening hikes are strongly encouraged as there is nowhere better to experience the setting sun in Antigua.
