At over 3800 meters above sea level, Titicaca Lake is the highest in the world, which means not only do visitors experience what its crystal blue waters have to offer in terms of diving, swimming and boating, but the views from here are incredible. Both the wildlife and aquatic life in and around the lake are also something to behold. La Paz, beyond being the gateway to the fabulous lake, is really all about the mountains. You feel as though you are sky high here. It is actually the highest capital city in the world. If you hop on Mi Teleferico, a one-of-a-kind cable car experience, you can take it all in.
Located about ten miles from the center of the city, this unique rock formation is actually the result of erosion. Once a mountain, it is now a series of tall clay and rock spires. The minerals inherent to the structures create a variety of different colors.
The second highest peak in Bolivia, Illimani is a short drive from La Paz. Popular among avid climbers, it was first “conquered” in the late 1800s. Today, Illimani is often attempted by serious climbers, though there are a number of exciting tours that allow less-experienced guests to explore the base of the mountain.
Situated in Titicaca Lake, this island is known as something a haven of Incan ruins. Myths and legends surround the history of the island, and there can be seen the archeological remnants of the Temple of Virgins. There are at least two boat companies running daily excursions to the historic island.
La Paz experiences winter from June to August. The city's high altitude contributes to cold temperatures during this season, with daytime highs in the 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit and chilly nights. Winter is an ideal time to explore the city's cultural attractions, such as the Witches' Market and the historic San Francisco Church. Visitors can also take advantage of the clear skies and enjoy breathtaking views of the city and the surrounding mountains from viewpoints like Mirador Killi Killi.
Spring in La Paz, from September to November, brings milder temperatures and blooming landscapes. The city becomes more vibrant with colorful flowers, making it an enjoyable time for exploring parks and gardens. Spring is also a great time to visit nearby attractions like Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon), a unique geological formation with interesting rock formations.
The summer season in La Paz, from December to February, is characterized by warm and pleasant temperatures during the day, with highs in the 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit. This is a popular time for tourists to visit the city. Summer is an excellent time to explore the city's diverse culinary scene and try local Bolivian dishes at traditional restaurants and street food vendors.
Fall in La Paz, from March to May, brings mild temperatures and beautiful autumn colors in the surrounding valleys. This season is a great time for day trips to places like Tiwanaku, an ancient archaeological site that offers insights into Bolivia's pre-Columbian history. Fall is also an ideal time to venture to the nearby Lake Titicaca and explore its islands and indigenous communities.
