A popular wine región along the Elqui River, the valley produces the most wine commercially in the country. Three prominent observatories can be found in this region—all extremely popular with tourists. Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca offers guests a 30cm telescope through which they get to gaze at stars in nearby galaxies. For those literary buffs, this museum offers a comprehensive look at the life and career of Nobel Prize winning poet Gabriela Mistral. One of the most famous literary figures in the country, Mistral was also politically and socially active.

Daytime temperatures can reach the 80s to 90s Fahrenheit, making it a popular time for tourists to visit the valley. Summer offers the opportunity to explore local vineyards and indulge in the region's renowned pisco production. Visitors can also enjoy refreshing dips in the natural pools formed by the Elqui River.
Fall in El Valle del Elqui, from March to May, brings pleasant temperatures and a mix of green and autumn colors.
