The state capital, Salem is the third largest city in Oregon. With the Willamette River running through the northern end, Salem’s charm and deeply ingrained history are undeniable. As it is located in the Willamette Valley this capital city is definitely part of wine country. There are more than a few vineyards to explore here, and their thriving brewery industry is also not to be missed. One of the city’s claims to fame is the annual Salem Film Festival. Each year more and more flock to the Pacific Northwest to check out the cinematic offerings. From the Riverfront Walk to the historic Bush’s Pasture Park, there is a great deal to explore within the city limits. As far as the food scene in Salem, with nearly 500 restaurants, it’s safe to say you will find a great meal.
Because of its walkability and given the many parks, trails and pathways carved throughout the city, Salem really does have that “small town charm.” While perhaps not as hipster as Portland, it is definitely every bit as welcoming. Feel free to walk or bike around and explore; visitors really love the Minto Island Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge.
Culture and history run deep in Salem. One of the main museum draws is the Hallie Ford Museum of Art housed at Willamette University. Also, be sure to visit the Oregon Garden (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) as well as the Mission Mill Museum which gives guests a glimpse of the city’s Oregon Trail past.
There are some amazing parks right within the city limits. And within just a short drive there are also a number of stunning areas to explore. Nearby Silver Falls State Park boasts over a dozen waterfalls. While the city’s Riverfront Park is one of the region’s most popular.
Like most of coastal Oregon, winters are cool and rainy. It isn't the best time to visit.
Springs are nice as the city has so many parks (and trees) that the colors are beautiful. Highs are in the 60s.
Summers are wonderful for playing outside. The highs top out in the low-80s. Summer is also the dry season.
Falls are quite pleasant. The trees change and the colors are striking.
