With nearby access to both mountains and the desert, El Paso is one of Texas’s “wildest” cities. You’ll find many bikers flocking here to attempt the thrilling and adventurous trails. And with 3 state parks within city limits, hiking options abound for those eager to explore what this west Texas town has to offer. Situated close to Juarez, Mexico, El Paso’s cultural atmosphere is definitely diverse. Spend a day in the city and you can feel the history and tradition just about everywhere you turn. El Paso is also home to the University of Texas El Paso—the largest public university in the area. This means that a youthful energy definitely underlies the heart of the downtown. With plenty of restaurants, bars, live music venues and theaters, the city has a very vibrant nightlife.
Because of its rich cultural history, El Paso inevitably attracts singers and artists from all over. As a result, they have become something of a hotspot for music festivals. The Neon Desert Music Festival is held on five stages, while the Sun City Music Festival features an array of electronically created music. As far as other art forms go, from the El Paso Museum of Art to the acclaimed Symphony Orchestra, the city has numerous venues and events for tourists to check out.
As interesting as the city itself, are the outdoor adventures in and around El Paso. The Rio Grande offers plenty by way of fishing, boating and tubing. Franklin Mountains State Park is the largest urban park in the nation and entices visitors with its 37 square miles of high desert wilderness.
With a robust academic and athletic culture, the university really does add so much to the El Paso atmosphere. They hold a total of 21 national championships across all of their athletic teams, and they also have one of the largest sports venues in Texas with Sun Bowl Stadium.
Winters are fairly mild and very dry. Highs are in the upper-50s. El Paso occasionally gets a trace of snow.
April highs are around 80 degrees and it is another dry season. Good time to explore outdoors.
Summers get really hot, with highs regularly in the upper-90s. Spring and fall are better times to visit for the weather. Summer is relatively the rainy season.
