Quiahuixtlan, Cempoala y La Antigua, and Route of Cortes
Discover Totonac ruins and colonial gems on a scenic journey through Veracruz’s rich past!
Set out on a journey north of Veracruz to explore the rich cultural and archaeological heritage of the Totonac world. First, visit Quiahuiztlán - "the place where the rain rises" - perched on the Hill of the Metates. Here, you'll discover one of the most beautiful pre-Hispanic cemeteries, along with ancient pyramids and a ball court, all set against breathtaking views of Villa Rica's coastline on the Gulf of Mexico.
Next, travel to Cempoala, meaning "place of twenty waters," once a powerful Totonac center surrounded by rivers. Explore its remarkable ruins, including the Temple of the Chichimecas and the Circle of the Gladiators. Your final stop is La Antigua, a picturesque riverside town shaded by towering trees. Step into the past with visits to the Casa del Cabildo, the Ermita del Rosario - the first Catholic church in Mexico - and the legendary Casa de Cortés. After strolling across the charming suspension bridge, you'll return to Veracruz or Boca del Río.
