Living Abroad and Making Memories

My husband and I were hiking with our dog in a Georgia state park when I brought up the idea of quitting our jobs and moving to Latin America. I knew it was out there and was not expecting he would take it seriously. To my surprise, he was sold on the idea immediately.  He started asking questions and brainstorming with me on when, where, and how long we envisioned this international experience taking place.

There were some big thoughts and questions to consider. We asked ourselves, “What will we do for income? How will we be able to transport our dog abroad? How will we handle medical insurance? How challenging will it be to move to a new country with a different language, climate, and culture? Is it worth all the planning?”

For us, it was all worth it. Our wedding was just five months away, and we wanted the first year of our marriage to be unforgettable. We knew the memories we made abroad would last a lifetime.

About two months before our wedding, we found an opportunity in Caribbean Costa Rica, finalized the details of our travel, and put in notice at our jobs.

That was it! We were heading to tropical paradise. Now that the word was out at work, we could finally alert our friends and extended family in the weeks leading up to our wedding. It was exciting that our loved ones would be coming together for our ceremony and to see us off on our journey.

We had seen on The Knot that we could request experiences instead of material items as gifts, which was HUGE for us since we wouldn’t have an official address for the foreseeable future. We’ve also never been traditional gift people. Don’t enjoy giving them, don’t enjoy getting them!

The Spur Experiences options on The Knot offered opportunities to explore our new destination country, so we loaded up our registry with unique and fun activities in Costa Rica. This let guests purchase personalized adventures we could do together as a couple and gave our loved ones the chance to be a part of our journey in some way as well.

Just a few weeks after our wedding, we boarded the plane to Costa Rica with anticipation! It was a wild, beautiful ride and we wouldn’t change it for the world.
Since leaving such a stunning country, one of our best memories is thanks to a Spur Experiences voucher we received on our wedding registry. We took a morning cruise from Playa del Coco on a sailboat that we had all to ourselves. This isn’t something we would have paid to do because we both like to watch the wallet, so we were grateful to have received it as a gift. Our first year of marriage was bold and different. It brought us so much closer together and taught us so much about ourselves and about each other. If you have the privilege of doing something like this, this is your sign to take the leap!
