This particular region of Mexico really didn’t exist prior to the 80s. And since then it has become the beach and resort place to party. Cancun itself is basically divided into the town and then the 13-mile hotel zone strip which offers an abundance of top notch resorts, featuring all-inclusive stays and it has become extremely popular with families, spring breakers and young couples alike. Cancun’s sister city, Playa del Carmen tends to be a little more urban and its downtown, especially the acclaimed Fifth Avenue, are a bit more accessible. Here you can shop the local markets and enjoy an authentic Mexican experience.

  • The Beaches

Hands down, tourists come to both regions for the white sand beaches that look out over crystal blue water. In Cancun alone there are nine public beaches. And depending on what hotel you stay at, many have their own private beach access. Within Playa del Carmen, there are several beach clubs that offer a bevy of amenities, among the most popular, the Blue Parrot and Lido’s.

  • Mayan Ruins

You can’t really visit Mexico without seeing some Mayan ruins. Playa del Carmen is a great starting point from which to visit such places. The Tulum Mayan ruins are about an hour from here. One of the more popular tours, the scenery here, ancient remnants backed by blue waters, is incredible.

  • The Food

These resort areas are most definitely known for their cuisine. Paella is definitely a local favorite. While in Cancun the foodie experience abounds, as the region has deep Spanish roots but blends this with Mexican flare. Among the top spots: La Destileria and the ultimate taco destination: Tacun.
