Oaxaca really does combine the best of all parts of Mexico. The city is rich with culture and history, representing periods ranging from pre-Hispanic to pre-Columbian. The locals here work to preserve the city’s quaint and vibrant atmosphere. For those more into seeing something of the natural side of Mexico, while in Oaxaca visit the botanical gardens featuring over 2 acres of indigenous plant life. Check out the Tule tree—a more than 2000-year-old phenomenon; it takes thirty people to cover the circumference of the trunk.

  • Monte Alban

Once a ceremonial capital, Monte Alban is one of the largest archeological sites in the region. Visited by many, the site represents one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica. Tour the main plaza, check out the altar, and see the “stones of the dancers.”

  • Mercado Benito Juarez

This is a market that truly has it all, not to mention, one that has become something of a gathering place for locals and travelers alike. From produce to arts and crafts, the Mercado gives you a real sense of the city.

  • Museums

Oaxaca is certainly proud of its historic past—and has the museums to show for it. Visit the Museum of Cultures and see numerous ancient artifacts. On the other end of the spectrum, you might also stop by Museo de los Pintores Oaxaqueños which houses the graphic works of up and coming local artists.
