Boys to Men Mentoring is a community based, in-school mentoring program serving middle and high school boys identified to be at risk of educational failure, juvenile delinquency, or gang-related offenses. Boys to Men provides mentors who show up at the schools weekly fostering a community of support, encouragement, and stability for these young men which positively influences their behavior, grades, and school attendance.

Fatherless boys are NINE times more likely to drop out of high school, TEN times more likely to abuse drugs, and TWENTY times more likely to end up in prison. Currently, over 90% of men in the prison system grew up without a father. Today, there are 44,612 boys growing up in fatherless homes in San Diego. In 1996, Herb Sigurdson, his son Joe, and friend Craig McClain founded Boys to Men seeking to eradicate the devastating effects of fatherlessness in our community. Boys to Men provides mentors who show up at the schools weekly fostering a community of support, encouragement, and stability for these young men. Boys to Men has been proven to positively influence student behavior with program participants showing grade improvement and increased attendance. The program also includes an Adventure Mountain Weekend allowing the boys to participate in carefully crafted activities that are proven to increase positive self-regard and emotional intelligence.Today, Boys to Men has grown from one to forty weekly meeting in eight years. Serving almost 800 boys in San Diego County, Boys to Men hopes to continue expanding until all boys in San Diego have positive men that they can depend on in their lives.
