Once a ceremonial capital, Monte Alban is one of the largest archeological sites in the region. Visited by many, the site represents one of the earliest cities of Mesoamerica. Tour the main plaza, check out the altar, and see the “stones of the dancers.”

Oaxaca is certainly proud of its historic past—and has the museums to show for it. Visit the Museum of Cultures and see numerous ancient artifacts. On the other end of the spectrum, you might also stop by Museo de los Pintores Oaxaqueños which houses the graphic works of up and coming local artists.
