College Track recruits students from underserved communities and works continuously with them from the summer before ninth grade through college graduation. Our ten-year program removes the barriers that prevent students from earning their college degree by providing them with comprehensive academic support, leadership training, financial and college advising, and scholarships. We teach our students the skills necessary to succeed in college and beyond.
A college education is crucial for both economic success and civic engagement. The share of jobs that require postsecondary education has doubled over the last 40 years and by 2020, 65 percent of jobs will require postsecondary education. College graduates have greater financial prosperity than their peers without four-year degrees; they are 2.2 times more likely to be employed and will earn 1.7 times more income than high school graduates. College graduates also contribute more to their communities and engage more fully in our democracy; they are twice as likely to participate in society as volunteers and nearly twice as likely to vote. When only one in five students from low-income communities who enroll in college will graduate, College Track’s work to empower underrepresented students is more vital than ever. College Track understands that these numbers reflect the lives of complex and ambitious young people who have the intellect and drive to succeed but all-too-often lack the guidance, individual support, and resources necessary to persist to and through college. Since opening our flagship site in East Palo Alto with 27 students, we have expanded to nine communities across three states and will empower nearly 3,000 students in the 2017-2018 academic year. Today, 96% of our students are accepted to four-year colleges nationwide and College Track students are more than twice as likely to graduate from a four-year university than their peers. Our alumni leave their campuses not only as graduates, but as the new standard for their families, friends, and communities.
