The mission of Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles (JBBBSLA) is to assist youth in achieving their full potential through innovative, impactful programs that facilitate lasting mentoring relationships and support positive development. JBBBSLA runs community-based mentoring programs, offers college scholarships, and owns and operates Camp Bob Waldorf on the Max Straus Campus, a 112-acre residential camp and retreat center in the Verdugo Hills of Glendale.
Founded in 1915, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles (JBBBSLA) enriches the lives of Jewish and non-Jewish children. The common denominator in our mentor and camp programs is vulnerable youth in need of role models. Our mission is to assist children in achieving their full potential through innovative, transformative programs that facilitate lasting mentoring relationships and support positive youth development. Today, JBBBSLA directly helps more than 1,500 children per year through a variety of mentor, scholarship, and camp programs.JBBBSLA is the proud home of Camp Bob Waldorf on the Max Straus Campus, a non-denominational, overnight summer camp located on 112 acres in the rolling Verdugo Hills of Glendale, California. Since 1938, our camp has welcomed more than 60,000 children, regardless of a family’s religion, race, or ability to pay. Campers range from ages 7-15 and come from low-income families living in Los Angeles, many of whom face adversities in their daily lives, due to factors such as poverty, unstable living situations, or abuse. Our camp provides a welcome respite for our campers, who get to experience a variety of activities including archery, swimming, dance, music, drama, arts & crafts, photography, hiking, horseback riding, rock climbing, animal care, cooking, gardening, and more.
