Spread the Word Nevada is a children’s literacy nonprofit, dedicated to advancing early childhood literacy by placing books into the hands and homes of children within Southern Nevada’s at-risk, low income communities. While developing a love of reading, these libraries promote future academic achievement and self-confidence, which impacts lifelong success.
Spread the Word Nevada programs serve 54 at-risk elementary schools throughout Southern Nevada with an estimated population of 47,000 students. The schools selected have an average of 86% participation rate in the free/reduced lunch program. By ethnicity, we serve a population which is 71% Hispanic, 9% Caucasian, 14% African American, 2% Asian American, 1.5% Multi-race, 1% Pacific Islander and 0.5% Native American. Since 2001, Spread the Word Nevada has distributed more than 4.5 million books to more than 505,000 children.During the initial distribution at an adopted school, all pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students receive a canvas tote bag that serves as a “safe-keeping” place for storing their book collections. Five new and gently used books are selected at this kick-off celebration, and then, once a month, one additional book is selected to add to their libraries.
