A historic mining town, the small city of Globe is still heavily focused on its mining activity. Actually, over half of those who live here work in copper smelting—the process by which metal is extracted from ore. Because of its deeply ingrained mining roots, the region is known for what it can show visitors about the past. Old Dominion Mine Park captures the essence of what it was like during the later 19th century in this booming mine town. Pinal Creek, a tributary of the Salt River, flows through the town, allowing for some terrific fishing and depending on the season, kayaking and canoeing as well. As far as the downtown scene, guests to Globe enjoy walks through the historic district, quaint shops and restaurants as well as fairly decent sized parks through which they can hike, bike or jog.
With two main parks, there is ample area to take in the outdoor scenery. Round Mountain Park is a high desert trail that has an amazing payoff once you get to the top. While Besh Ba Gowah is a park and museum built around a restored ancient pueblo—definitely worth seeing.
