The British city of Hamilton was established in 1897 and today is a thriving hub for international business, local government, and tourism. The city of Hamilton was named for Sir Henry Hamilton, the governor at the time, and in 1815 took over as the official capital of Bermuda, which had previously been Saint Georges. Tourists love Hamilton for its colorful architecture, laid-back and welcoming locals, and, of course, the incredible weather year-round. This city is culturally vibrant and has many shops, museums, gardens, and parks to explore. For those who loves beaches, there are plenty in walking distance where locals and visitors enjoy watersports such as surfing, sailing, snorkeling, and more. For those interested in government, check out the Sessions House, home to Bermuda’s House of Assembly and Supreme Court, and even peek into a session of Parliament! Visitors should also visit the iconic Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and climb the tower to get an awesome view of the city nestled on a picturesque harbor.

  • Front Street

Front Street is a main thoroughfare in Hamilton that is known for its shopping. It is located directly across from where cruise ships dock, making it the closest port to a main shopping district in the world. However, Front Street isn’t just a place for shopping; it’s packed with eateries and taverns that serve tasty cocktails and yummy local cuisine. Be sure to check out the museums and art galleries on the street as well! The street is often packed with parades during the day. For the night owls, it is said that the bar scene at night becomes quite the party.

  • The City Parks

If you are looking for beautiful scenery, you’ve come to the right city. For the size of Hamilton, there are several parks to be enjoyed throughout. The most iconic park in the city is Victoria Park, which takes up an entire city block, and was named after Queen Victoria. Designed with a traditional English-style, visitors lose themselves in the vivid flowers and sunken gardens. The other parks that shouldn’t be missed include Queen Elizabeth Park and Gardens (previously named Par La Ville Park), Barr’s Bay and Barr’s Park, All Buoy’s Point Park, and the hidden Cedar Park (it’s actually hidden!).

  • History and Culture

Like many other island cities, Hamilton is rich with history and culture. There are many notable landmarks such as the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, or the Bermuda Cathedral as it’s known by locals. This cathedral truly can’t be missed as there is a city mandate preventing buildings to block any view of it. Visitors also enjoy exploring the Bermuda National Historical Society where they can see artifacts such as a sea chest, along with original 17th century portraits. The Bermuda Gallery is another must-see as it’s home to many European paintings, African sculptures, and other historic and contemporary paintings and photographs.
