Fresno is located in central California in the San Joaquin Valley. The city was established during the California Gold Rush. Fresno is the 5th biggest city (by population) in California and the largest city that isn’t on the coast. The city has a decent amount of outdoors activities, including visiting national parks, strolling through the Blossom Trail, and enjoying the local wineries.
Many tourists stay in Fresno for the access to some of the country’s best national parks. This includes Yosemite (60 miles), Kings Canyon (60 miles), and Sequoia (75 miles).
Fresno has some fantastic options for local parks. The Fresno Chaffee Zoo is one of the best zoos in the state and they recently launched an open-air African exhibit. Shinzen Japanese Garden is an unexpected gem where you can stroll the gardens and see koi fish and bonsai trees.
Fresno has a surprising amount and variety of museums. The Fresno Art Museum is a smaller venue but very hands-on, including painting nights for guests. The Meux Home Museum is the former home a surgeon from the Civil War-era.
Fresno doesn't get much rain, but the "rainy season" is from December through March. Winters are mild, with daily highs in upper 50s.
Late spring can be a good time to stay in Fresno and visit the national parks (before the summer rush). May is dry and sunny, with temps in the 80s.
Summer is hot and dry. Temperatures regularly reach the upper 90s.
Early fall is another good time to visit. October averages daily high temps around 80 degrees. Again, fall can be a good time to visit the parks while missing the summer rush.
