The Mile-High City represents the center of activity for the state of Colorado. The local government has invested heavily in making the urban area a place to work, live, and play. The recent redevelopment of Union Station makes downtown Denver more accessible than ever before. Sports fans flock to the city to cheer on any of the four major professional sports teams. More than anything, Denver is known as an active culture. Denver is regularly ranked in the top ten for fittest cities in the US.
Denver’s arts and culture scene is very active. The most notable venue is the Denver Performing Arts Center, which hosts everything from local intimate shows to Broadway productions. Culture vultures also enjoy major attractions with the Denver Art Museum, Denver Zoo, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.
Denver is one of the few cities that has all four major sports teams (Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets, and Avalanche), and all of the arenas are within walking distance of downtown. Many Denver residents are transplants, so they represent their hometown teams at the games. Broncos home games are pretty much a holiday, where the city stops to cheer on their favorite franchise.
You know Denver is a city for beer drinkers when the country’s largest beer event, the Great American Beer Festival, calls Denver its home for the annual fall event. Denver is also home to dozens of breweries. Residents bring their dogs to hang out at Denver Beer Company and sip on their specialty beers, such as the Graham Cracker Porter. Denver is consistently ranked as one of the top cities in the country for beer lovers.
Denver has so many cool events throughout the year. Here are a few just to give a sense: Denver Film Festival, 80s Ski Party, Denver 420 Fest, PrideFest, Denver Burger Battle, A Taste of Colorado (food festival), Brew at the Zoo, Denver Chalk Art Festival, and the Derby Party (biggest Kentucky Derby party outside of the state Kentucky).
Winter is cold, with high temps in the mid-40s. However, the climate is dry enough that the cool weather doesn't feel nearly as intense as more humid states at the same temperature. Denver still sees plenty of sunshine in the winters. When people visit Denver in the winter, it is usually as a stopover to get to the ski towns just west in the Rocky Mountains.
Springs can mean anything in Denver. The city gets the most snowfall in March and April, but this is typically centered around a few big storms. Average high temps are in the low 60s in April and up to the low 80s by June. The city celebrates opening day for the Colorado Rockies as a holiday for the start of spring.
Summers in Denver are underrated. The weather is perfect as it is a mostly dry heat with highs in the mid- to upper 80s. Many afternoons see a brief rain shower that cools off the city. Summer is a popular time to visit Denver as it has great weather and many cool events.
Falls in Denver are fairly mild. September has highs in the upper 70s, but this drops to the mid-50s by November. Fall and winters are the dry seasons in Denver. Many residents enjoy outdoor activities or cheering on their favorite football teams.
