Known for its proximity to Lake Tahoe, Reno has a number of fun and exciting activities for visitors from around the world. Called the “biggest little city in the world” for a reason, from the bars, to the restaurants, to the live performances, the overall vibe here is what you would deem eclectic and certainly hot. There are also a ton of recreational/outdoor activities in Reno. During the day visitors can engage in hiking, biking, golf or exploring the beautiful scenery of Galena Creek Park. Skiing and snowboarding are extremely popular as the Tahoe area is home to some of the best slopes in the country, and with the Truckee River visitors can enjoy kayaking along with white water rafting. Reno though is most definitely a city known for its casinos. It is actually the birthplace of the world famous Harrah’s. Gamblers from all over enjoy the glitz of this region’s casino scene.
While it’s not the biggest city in Nevada, it does have a great deal by way of food offerings. Small bistros, gourmet dining and casual pub style venues constitute the restaurant scene in this eclectic city. Recently the downtown area has undergone a revitalization in terms of all things culinary. Experimenting with robust flavors and seasonal combinations is trending here.
Reno is very proud of its artistic heritage. Artown is a massive festival held annually in July. Attracting half a million, the free event highlights dance, music, painting, film and sculpture. It has grown into something of a cult phenomenon. Not to mention, the Nevada Museum of Art is the biggest museum in the state and features an incredible outdoor sculpture exhibit.
The biggest of its kind in the country, this ‘race’ is a three day event showcasing over one thousand hot air balloons. A major draw, the event attracts tourists from around the nation.
The second largest college in the state, UNR is a great school for journalism. It helps imbue the city with a distinctive college town feel and the Nevada Wolf Pack gives sports enthusiast something to cheer about.
Winters are a popular time to visit nearby Lake Tahoe for the skiing.
Spring is a bit of a slow season as a lot of the Lake Tahoe seasonal activities wind down. The weather is mild, as April highs are in the mid-60s and it is dry.
Summers are much more comfortable in Reno than Las Vegas. Highs are in the low-90s and it is the dry season. Many people visit Reno as part of Lake Tahoe trip. Consider planning around the Great Balloon Race, which typically happens in early September.
Falls are also mild, as October highs are around 70 degrees. Some visitors love the changing of the fall colors in the nearby areas.
