One of the largest cities in South America, Lima is a capital with a lot to offer for those who want to experience urban chic, as well as for those looking to scour the country’s past. Restaurants and shops abound, as do museums and cultural icons throughout the city. And for those who want to spend some time communing with the outdoors when in/around Lima, there are gorgeous beaches, extensive bike tours that take you along cliffs overlooking the ocean, as well as archeological Incan ruins to explore.
Even if you aren’t an avid shopper, Larcomar is one shopping center that you must see when in Peru; in fact, it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. It is actually built into the side of a cliff and subsequently offers amazing views of the Pacific.
Known as something of an artsy district, Barranco gives visitors glimpses of an alternative, up and coming art scene. At night, the area comes alive with its trendy nightclubs and bars. There are also a few very cool museums and galleries to check out contemporary art.
One of the most popular beaches closest to the capital city, San Bartolo is clean, quaint and a great place to just relax for the day as you take in the sun and listen to the surf. Plus, there are a lot of great paces to shop and eat right there.
Lima's winter season is from June to September. During this time, the weather is cool, with temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s Fahrenheit. It's an ideal time to explore Lima's historical sites, such as the colonial-era architecture in the historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the impressive Monastery of San Francisco. Winter is also a great time to indulge in Lima's renowned gastronomy, with many restaurants offering traditional Peruvian dishes.
Spring in Lima, from October to November, brings slightly warmer temperatures and occasional misty mornings. The city's landscapes become greener, and the parks and gardens are in full bloom. Spring is an excellent time to visit Lima's cultural institutions, such as the Larco Museum, which houses a vast collection of pre-Columbian artifacts.
The summer season in Lima occurs from December to March. The weather is warm and humid, with daytime temperatures reaching the 80s Fahrenheit. While the city experiences some coastal fog, known as "garúa," summer is a popular time for tourists to visit Lima's beautiful beaches and seaside districts like Miraflores and Barranco.
Fall in Lima, from March to May, brings milder temperatures and occasional drizzles. It's a quieter time in the city, making it perfect for travelers seeking a more relaxed experience. Fall is an excellent time to enjoy Lima's outdoor parks and promenades, such as the picturesque Parque del Amor, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
