Part of the southern Texas Gulf Coast, these two places are what vacation destinations should be. The beaches of course are the main draw here. From nearby Mustang Island State Park, to IB Magee Beach, to Padre Island, the coastline is beautiful, relaxing and always welcoming. Beyond the water side of this area, there is also plenty to do by way of art, culture and entertainment. The Port “A” arts center attracts people from all over, as the natural scenery is an inspiration to many. While much of the nightlife centers on waterfront venues showcasing local acts.
This region is known as the Fishing Capital of Texas. Given its Gulf side locale, it certainly makes sense. There’s a variety of piers from which to cast. Go deep sea fishing or stay in the shallower waters of the Bay. The area hosts just over 20 fishing tournaments throughout the year.
Of course, this is going to be a very seafood-centric culture. With an abundance of restaurants from open air, to fine dining, the culinary options are delicious. Some eateries will even allow you to bring in your own “catch of the day,” and they will prepare it for you.
The region has many events and festivals catering to tourists, Winter Texans and locals. The Harvest Moon Regatta is the largest point-to-point sailboat race in the US; the Texas Sandfest attracts over 100,000 people a year, while the Deep Sea Roundup is a major fishing tournament in the region.
Winters are the slow season as it is too cool for a lot of the water activities. Temps are in the mid-60s and it is the dry season.
Spring gets busy for the spring break crowd. The weather is fairly mild with temps in the low-70s.
Summer is the busy season at the beach. Temps are in the high-80s. Mid-summer is the start of hurricane season so make sure to check the forecast.
Early fall can be a good time to visit as the weather is still warm and you can avoid the summer crowds. October highs are in the low-80s.
