Olympic National Park is located in northwest Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. The park is most known for being an extremely diverse area, ranging from wilderness beaches to glaciated mountains to old growth rainforests. The park is perfect for connecting with nature. Some of the most popular activities include hiking, fishing, boating, and camping. Olympic National Park has a huge diversity of wildlife, including whales, mountain goats, Roosevelt elks, and black bears.
Crescent Lake and Lake Cushman are beautiful locations that make fantastic campsites. Both lakes have cabins as well, and are perfect for recreation. If you prefer the coast, make sure to see Ruby Beach (dramatic rocks and driftwood) or Rialto Beach (massive trees and powerful waves).
The park has plenty of options for stunning mountain views. One of the most popular is Hurricane Ridge, which is a 17-mile road that takes visitors through forests to the mountaintops.
The Hoh Rainforest feels like walking into another country. The forest has amazing biodiversity and hiking through the trees feels magical. One of the more popular hikes is Hall of Masses trail.
Winter is cold and much of the park is closed or unavailable. Winter can be a great time to visit for those who like skiing or snowshoeing.
Spring weather can be a little unpredictable, but it is the best time of year for potentially seeing black bears and for bird watching.
Summer is the peak tourism season and certain areas of the park get quite busy. Consider avoiding July and August (even though the weather is great) if you plan on visiting the busy spots. The weather is warm and dry, so it is perfect if you don't mind (or avoid) the crowds.
The park was established in part by Theodore Roosevelt and then designated a national park by Franklin Roosevelt. The park is known for having the aptly named Roosevelt elk and the best time for viewing is in the fall. The fall colors are beautiful and the weather is still decent in early fall.
